INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO HATSUN – KANCHEEPURAM DAIRY PLANT

HATSUN AGRO PRODUCT LTD

On April 26th, 2024, the Department of Management Studies at SRM Valliammai Engineering college at SRM Nagar, Kattankulathur organised an industrial visit to Hatsun – Kancheepuram diary (Hatsun Agro Product Ltd), Plant was visited by the MBA Students (total 56) to acquire practical experience and exposure with the production process, Quality management, Managerial duties and other organisation operational activities involved in the dairy industry.

The students were accompanied by Mrs. A. Uma Devi, Assistant Professor – MBA and Mr. K. Kiran, Assistant Professor – MBA, visited the HATSUN – Kancheepuram dairy plant around 10.30 am, the plant’s Admin staff welcomed us with his open arms. She took us around the unit and explained us each and every step in the production process of Milk. The factory outlay was perfectly cleaned, organized and both the pathways had boards stating their layout blueprint. This industry hold space for plants which adds, quality to their environment and to its aesthetic look as well. Then we were guided by the Production Head,  he then led us close to the plant's front door and gave us orange-colored safety jackets and hats. Boys and girls entered the plant through different doorways. The factory can produce 29 lakh litres per day in total. With two shifts working 12 hours each, the plant is operational 24 hours a day. We could see that there were fire extinguishers every 50 metres. This facility produces four different varieties of milk: full-cream milk, skim milk, standardised milk, and toned milk. One of the plant's employees described the procedure from raw material sourcing through post-production. In order to prevent the growth of bacteria, the raw milk is obtained from the cattle owners and immediately frozen at 50C until it reaches the processing facility. The milk sample is put through 45 different types of testing, and subsequent procedures are carried out based on the test results. The ratio of butter oil to cream mixture distinguishes the four types of milk from one another. Because it has been homogenised, this milk has the distinctive property of not developing a skin when heated. The expiration date for Arokya milk is four days after the date of packaging.

After explanation, we were instructed to form a line, and the plant manager led us to the assembly line where we could view the pasteurizer, cream mixer, butter melting machine, and homogenizers with various capacities. Then we went to a lab for quality control testing, where the lab technician gave us an explanation of the testing procedures and we got to interact with them. Then the supervisor showed us around the packaging area where we could see the various milk packaging sizes and how damaged packs were recycled. The ability to enter the cool room, which was about 50C and held the packed milk for delivery to distributors, was the most fascinating aspect of the visit.

Manufacturing process at Hatsun – Kancheepuram Dairy Plant

Processing

After procurement, the milk is taken for the all-important quality testing and weight checks. HAP is the world’s first dairy company to develop and use thermal battery-based technology in its BMCs, for chilling milk immediately after procurement. It has worked extensively with a Boston-based US company in this regard. The bulk milk coolers run on thermal batteries which store electricity whenever available from the grid. This helps in chilling the milk right at source, even in rural areas with irregular power supply.

The company employs at least two types of testing: Gerber Method and Eko Milk Analyzers. The milk is then subjected to pasteurization, homogenization and bacteria clarification — all performed by a staff of professionals with the single-minded goal of adhering to the highest standards of quality.

HAP sources over 80% of its entire industrial power requirement from renewable sources like solar power and windmills. The Ekomilk analysers, electronic weighing scales, display, stirrer, scanner, tablet and printers in all HMBs operate entirely on solar powered batteries. None of the company’s HMBs has or requires any diesel generator backup for collecting milk, thereby avoiding environmental and sound pollution. Every HMB building has a rooftop solar panel and battery that can store 900 watts of power.
