REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO
EXCEL DIE CASTING, THIRUMUDIVAAKAM, CHENNAI.
1. INTRODUCTION:
As part of our MBA academic programme, we visited Excel Die Casting, Thirumudivaakam, Chennai. The industrial visit was organized to provide practical exposure to the functioning of a manufacturing organization and to understand how management principles are applied in an actual industrial environment.
The visit provided us with an opportunity to observe the operations of a steel unit and understand the movement of materials from receipt and storage through processing, quality verification, packing and dispatch. It also enabled us to gain practical knowledge about the importance of planning, coordination, quality control, inventory management, logistics, maintenance and workplace safety.
As MBA students, the visit was useful in relating classroom concepts to practical business situations. Various subjects such as Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Inventory Management, Human Resource Management, Quality Management and Logistics Management, Automotive Manufacturing could be connected with the activities observed during the visit.
The industrial environment also helped us understand the importance of effective communication and coordination between departments. The experience provided a broader perspective of how different organizational functions work together to achieve operational efficiency and meet customer requirements. Students are also understanding the manufacturing processes like procurement, process flow and end manufacturing processes.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INDUSTRIAL VISIT:
The major objectives of the industrial visit were:
· To understand the functioning of a Automotive manufacturing organization.
· To gain practical exposure to Automotive operations.
· To understand the materials used in Automotive manufacturing process.
· To study the basic flow of materials within the plant.
· To understand production and operations management practices.
· To observe inventory and material-handling activities.
· To understand the importance of quality control in Automotive manufacturing process.
· To study the role of maintenance in continuous operations.
· To observe safety practices followed in the industrial environment.
· To understand packing, logistics and dispatch activities.
· To study coordination between different functional departments.
· To relate MBA concepts with practical industrial operations.
· To understand the importance of technology and resource utilization.
COMPANY PROFILE:
COMPANY PROFILE – EXCEL DIE CASTINGS
Excel Die Castings is an established manufacturing organization located at SIDCO Industrial Estate, Thirumudivakkam, Chennai. Established in 1986, the company specializes in pressure die casting and the manufacture of precision components primarily for the automotive and engineering industries. The organization has developed its capabilities through continuous investment in modern manufacturing equipment, process improvement and quality control.
The company operates a manufacturing facility equipped with pressure die-casting machines of different capacities, including 350-ton, 250-ton, 138-ton and 90-ton machines. Its manufacturing infrastructure is supported by machining, milling, grinding, shot blasting, descaling and heat-treatment facilities. The company also maintains testing and inspection facilities including CMM, spectrometer, X-ray inspection, hardness testing and universal testing equipment.
Excel Die Castings focuses on producing quality-oriented die-cast components according to customer requirements. Its operations provide students with practical exposure to die-casting technology, production planning, quality management, machine operations, maintenance, inventory management, supply-chain activities, employee management and industrial safety.
The company serves the automotive component sector and has developed a reputation for supplying die-cast products to industrial customers. Its emphasis on operational excellence, quality assurance, process control and continuous improvement makes the organization a useful industrial learning environment for MBA students, particularly in the areas of Operations Management, Human Resource Management, Supply Chain Management, Quality Management and Business Strategy.
LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE INDUSTRIAL VISIT:
The industrial visit helped us gain practical knowledge about the functioning of an Automotive Manufacturing Process. The major learning outcomes are:
· Understood the mines-to-dispatch flow involved in Automotive Manufacturing Process.
· Gained knowledge about the handling of Aluminium alloy die-casting components, Pressure
die-cast components etc.
· Understood the production process of OPC and PPC.
· Learned how conveyors are used for efficient material movement.
· Understood the importance of an Automotive Manufacturing Process before packing and dispatch.
· Gained practical knowledge of Operations and Supply Chain Management.
· Understood the importance of inventory control and material availability.
· Learned how quality is monitored during production and before dispatch.
· Understood the role of maintenance in maintaining continuous plant operations.
· Gained awareness of industrial safety practices and workplace discipline.
· Understood the importance of coordination between different functional departments.
· Connected classroom concepts from MBA subjects with actual industrial practices.
The visit helped us develop a practical perspective of manufacturing operations and understand how different management functions work together to support efficient production and timely delivery
CONCLUSION:
The industrial visit to Excel Die Casting, Thirumudivaakam, Chennai provided valuable practical exposure to Automotive Manufacturing Process. The visit helped us understand the movement of materials from the initial stages of production to the final packing and dispatch of die casting components. We gained practical knowledge about Aluminium alloy die-casting components, Pressure die-cast components etc. The visit also helped us understand how different functional areas work together to maintain continuous operations and timely product delivery.
The experience provided a clear connection between MBA concepts and their practical application in the manufacturing industry. It enhanced our understanding of Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Inventory Management, Quality Management and Logistics, while also providing awareness of workplace safety, technology and departmental coordination.
