MANUFACTURING PROCESS OVERVIEW

The Chengalpattu Grinding Unit is a cement grinding facility. Therefore, the process overview below focuses on grinding operations rather than the complete integrated cement manufacturing process.

 General Cement Grinding Process

Step 1 – Receipt of Clinker

Clinker is received at the grinding unit from the company's manufacturing facilities or other approved sources. Clinker is an intermediate product produced by heating a suitable raw meal in a cement kiln.

Step 2 – Storage of Materials

The clinker and other required materials are stored in designated areas. Proper storage is necessary to maintain the quality of materials and ensure uninterrupted production.

Step 3 – Feeding of Materials

Clinker and other required materials are fed into the grinding system in suitable proportions. The proportioning of materials depends on the cement type being produced.

Step 4 – Cement Grinding

The materials are ground into fine cement powder using grinding equipment. The grinding process is one of the most important operations because it influences the fineness and performance of the final product.

Step 5 – Separation and Classification

In a typical cement grinding system, separators are used to separate fine cement particles from coarser particles. The finer particles are collected as cement, while coarser particles may be returned for further grinding.

Step 6 – Cement Storage

The finished cement is transferred to storage silos. The silos help maintain the availability of cement for packing and dispatch.

Step 7 – Quality Testing

Samples of cement are tested to ensure that the product meets the required specifications. Quality testing helps maintain consistency and customer satisfaction.

Step 8 – Packing

The finished cement is packed into bags using suitable packing equipment. The packing process includes filling, weighing and handling the bags.

Step 9 – Dispatch

The packed cement is dispatched to customers, dealers and construction projects through suitable transport arrangements.

INTERACTIVE SESSION

1. What are the major operations carried out in the Chengalpattu Grinding Unit?

The major operations include receiving and storing clinker, proportioning clinker with other materials, cement grinding, quality testing, storage in silos, packing and dispatch. The grinding unit mainly focuses on converting clinker into finished cement rather than producing clinker itself.

2. What is the role of clinker in cement manufacturing?

Clinker is the main intermediate material used to produce cement. It is produced by heating limestone and other raw materials at high temperatures in a kiln at an integrated cement plant. At the grinding unit, clinker is finely ground with suitable additives to produce different types of cement. The fineness and composition of the ground material influence the properties of the final cement.

3. How is cement quality tested?

Cement quality is checked through laboratory and process-control tests. Common tests include:

  • Fineness – checks the particle size of cement.
  • Compressive strength – measures the strength developed by cement.
  • Setting time – determines how quickly cement begins and completes setting.
  • Soundness – checks dimensional stability after setting.
  • Consistency – determines the amount of water required for standard cement paste.
  • Chemical composition – checks important chemical parameters.

These tests help ensure that the finished cement meets the required standards and specifications.

4. What safety measures are followed in the plant?

Important safety measures include:

  • Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, safety shoes, goggles and other required equipment.
  • Following plant safety instructions and warning signs.
  • Maintaining a safe distance from moving machinery.
  • Restricting access to hazardous or operational areas.
  • Following electrical and machinery safety procedures.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping to prevent accidents.
  • Following emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Providing safety training and awareness to employees.

Safety is particularly important because cement plants involve heavy machinery, moving equipment, dust and electrical systems.

5.Where do they get the raw materials from?

The main raw material, clinker, is sourced from Ramco Cements' cement manufacturing facilities, including plants in the Ariyalur region of Tamil Nadu. The clinker is then brought to the Chengalpattu Grinding Unit for further grinding and processing into cement.

6. What is the size of the cement pack?

The cement is commonly packed in 25 kg bags at the facility. The packed cement is then prepared for storage and dispatch to customers and dealers
