REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO
ASAHI INDIA GLASS LIMITED (AIS), SIPCOT INDUSTRIAL PARK, TAMIL NADU 602117
Introduction
On October 30th, 2025, the Department of Management Studies at SRM Valliammai Engineering College, SRM Nagar, Kattankulathur, organized an industrial visit to Asahi India Limited (AIS) – Lamination Glass Manufacturing Plant, Sriperumbudur. The visit aimed to provide MBA students with real-time industrial exposure and a better understanding of manufacturing, quality management, and managerial functions involved in large-scale operations. A total of 55 students participated in this visit, accompanied by Dr. E.P. John, Assistant Professor (Sr.G) – MBA and Dr. K. Srimathi, Assistant Professor – MBA and reached the plant around 10.00 am.
Arrival and Orientation
Upon reaching the plant, security personnel instructed the students to maintain discipline and follow safety protocols during the visit. The group was warmly welcomed by an administrative staff member who gave a brief introduction about the company’s functional activities and plant safety measures. She explained the various stages of laminated glass manufacturing and highlighted the company’s commitment to quality and sustainability. The factory environment was clean, well-organized, and equipped with clearly marked pathways and layout boards ensuring smooth workflow and safety.
About the Company
Asahi India Glass Limited (AIS) is India’s leading integrated glass manufacturer catering to the automotive, architectural, and consumer glass markets. The Sriperumbudur unit specializes in laminated glass production using state-of-the-art machinery and advanced process control systems. A joint venture between Asahi Glass Co. Ltd. (Japan), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., and Labroo & Associates, AIS focuses on innovation, product quality, and sustainable industrial practices.
Quality and Certifications
Asahi India Limited (AIS) is deeply committed to maintaining world-class standards in product quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. The Sriperumbudur plant operates under stringent ISO-certified quality management systems, ensuring that every stage of production adheres to global benchmarks. The company follows a highly monitored Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) framework, covering raw material inspection, in-process checks, and final product validation.
AIS implements continuous improvement practices such as Six Sigma and Total Quality Management (TQM) to enhance operational efficiency and product consistency. The plant also complies with environmental and occupational safety standards, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing. Regular audits, employee training programs, and advanced testing facilities ensure that every laminated glass sheet meets international specifications for durability, optical clarity, and safety performance.
Through its certifications and disciplined quality processes, AIS continues to reinforce its position as a trusted leader in the glass manufacturing industry.
Manufacturing Process Overview
The Production Head guided the students through the different stages of laminated glass production. Before entering the main production area, students were provided with orange-colored safety jackets, helmets, and protective eyewear, as per plant regulations. Boys and girls entered through separate doorways following safety protocols.
The visit began with the raw glass inspection unit, where glass sheets are checked for clarity and thickness. This was followed by the cutting and washing section, where precision CNC cutting machines and automated washing systems prepare the glass for lamination. In the PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) lamination unit, students observed the bonding of two glass sheets with a PVB interlayer under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. The autoclave section demonstrated how air bubbles are removed under high heat and pressure to achieve perfect bonding.
Subsequently, students visited the Quality Control Department, where the team explained various tests conducted to ensure strength, durability, and optical clarity. The tour concluded at the packaging and dispatch section, where finished laminated glass sheets were prepared for delivery to automotive and construction clients.
Plant Features and Observations
The AIS plant operates continuously in two 12-hour shifts, ensuring round-the-clock production. The facility is maintained with high safety standards, and fire extinguishers are installed at regular intervals. The layout of the plant is highly systematic, with digital boards displaying process data and safety guidelines. The plant follows strong environmental and sustainability practices, including energy-efficient equipment and waste recycling measures.
Interactive Session
An interactive session was held with the Production Head and HR representative, where students clarified their queries about manufacturing and management processes.
Question: What makes laminated glass safer than normal glass?
Answer: Laminated glass has a PVB interlayer that holds the glass pieces together upon impact, preventing shattering and ensuring safety.
Question: How does AIS ensure consistent product quality?
Answer: AIS uses automated inspection systems, real-time data monitoring, and rigorous optical and stress testing at every production stage.
Question: What are the major applications of laminated glass?
Answer: Laminated glass is widely used in the automotive sector for windshields and in the architectural sector for facades and safety windows.
Outcome of the Visit
The industrial visit to Asahi India Limited provided students with valuable practical exposure to advanced manufacturing systems, automation, quality control, and supply chain coordination in the glass industry. It enhanced their understanding of workplace safety, sustainability practices, and industrial management, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and real-world applications.
