INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO HATSUN AGRO PRODUCT LIMITED – KANCHIPURAM PLANT

On April 16th, 2025, the Department of Management Studies at SRM Valliammai Engineering College organized an industrial visit to HATSUN AGRO PRODUCT LIMITED, located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. The visit aimed at giving students exposure to large-scale dairy production processes. A total of 48 first-year MBA students visited the plant to gain hands-on knowledge about the operations, management practices, and logistics of the dairy industry.

The students were accompanied by faculty members Dr. E.P. John and Ms. R. Parhana. The group reached the plant around 9:30 AM and was warmly welcomed by the company’s administrative and operations team.

As part of the safety and hygiene protocol, students were provided with head caps, jackets (lab coats) and hand sanitizers before entering the production premises.

We began the tour by observing the plant layout map displayed at the entrance, which gave a clear overview of various units such as the milk receiving section, processing area, packaging section, and cold storage. A staff member guided us throughout the tour and explained the process in detail.

ABOUT COMPANY INSIGHTS GAINED BY STUDENTS:

Hatsun Agro Product Limited (HAP) is one of India’s largest private sector dairy companies, founded by R.G. Chandramogan in 1970. The company is headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Key Products: Arokya Milk, Arun Ice Creams, Hatsun Curd, Ghee, Milk Powder, and Skimmed Milk.

Manufacturing Strength: HAP operates with advanced automated systems and hygienic production practices across several plants in South India.

Distribution: Hatsun has a vast distribution network across India and several global markets.

Innovation & Quality: HAP maintains international quality standards with stringent quality control, from procurement of milk to delivery of final products.

Sustainability: The company is actively involved in sustainable dairy farming practices and uses renewable energy sources like solar power.

VISIT TO PRODUCTION UNIT:

 ·       The production unit walk through included the milk reception dock where milk from farmers is first collected and tested. We were shown how milk goes through quality checks including fat content, SNF level, and microbial testing to ensure it meets the company’s quality standards. The milk is also tracked using digital systems for traceability and procurement records.

 ·       From there, we moved on to the pasteurization unit, where the milk is heated to a specific temperature and rapidly cooled to eliminate pathogens while preserving nutritional value. The pasteurized milk is stored in stainless steel insulated tanks to maintain hygiene and temperature control.

 ·       The processed milk is then directed to various automated production lines for making curd, ghee, butter, paneer, and packaged milk. Each product has its own dedicated section and follows a strict SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).

  ·       We also observed the homogenization process, which ensures uniform texture and taste across milk-based products. The curd section showed the fermentation process using bacterial cultures, while the ghee section used high-heat techniques for extraction.

The visit concluded with a tour of the packaging and cold storage section, where products are packed using automated filling and sealing machines. Each product type has dedicated packing lines with barcode labeling for inventory control. Finally, the finished goods are stored in cold rooms set at specific temperatures before being dispatched through a well-managed supply chain network.

INTERACTIVE SESSION:

Post the plant visit, students attended an interactive session with the company’s management team. The General Manager and HR executive addressed the students, answered queries about procurement, quality control, marketing strategies, and supply chain operations.

To conclude, the visit to Hatsun Agro Product Limited was highly informative. It gave us deep insights into the functioning of a large-scale dairy manufacturing company, its operations, quality management, and logistics.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chidhanbara Rajan (Director), Dr. M. Murugan (Principal), Dr. Venkata Sai Muramalla (HOD), and the coordinators Dr. E.P. John and Ms. R. Parhana for organizing this enlightening visit and providing us with such a valuable learning experience.
