Guest Lecture on “SPSS- Application of Research Tools

The Department of Management Studies, SRM Valliammai Engineering, Kattankulathur, organised the Guest Lecture on SPSS- Application of Research Tools for the First Year MBA Students (BATCH 2024 – 2026) on 7th March 2025 at 10.05Am to 11.45Am in Seminar Hall, New Block, SRMVEC.  The HOD Prof. Venkat Muramalla convened the programme.

Mrs. Anandhi.S, Assistant Professor, SRM Institute of Science and Technology Ramapuram Campus was the Chief Guest for the Guest Lecture. The session aimed to equip students with practical insights into the use of SPSS software in academic research. Mrs. Anandhi began her session by introducing basic concepts of statistics and research methodology. She explained the SPSS interface emphasizing its role in simplifying data analysis and improving the accuracy of research outcomes. She also demonstrated how to input and manage data effectively using SPSS. This part of the session was particularly useful for beginners, as it introduced the foundational elements of working with SPSS.

Following the introduction to SPSS, Mrs. Anandhi explained that the choice of statistical technique depends on the research objectives, type of data, and the hypotheses being tested. Among the key tools she discussed were Correlation analysis, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance), Chi-square test, and regression analysis.

In her explanation of correlation analysis, Mrs. Anandhi discussed both Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients and explained when each is appropriate based on the nature of the data. Using SPSS, she demonstrated how correlation coefficients can be generated, and how to interpret the output in terms of significance levels and strength of association.

Next, she elaborated on ANOVA (Analysis of Variance), a technique used to compare the means of three or more groups. She explained the logic behind ANOVA, which involves partitioning the overall variation into variation between groups and within groups. Mrs. Anandhi provided step-by-step guidance on how to perform one-way ANOVA using SPSS and interpret the F-statistic and p-value.

The Chi-square test, another key topic of the session, was introduced as a non-parametric test used for examining the association between categorical variables. Speaker explained that the test is widely used in survey research and public health studies to test hypotheses about the relationship between variables such as gender and preference, or age group and consumer behaviour.

One of the most comprehensive parts of the lecture was the segment on regression analysis, where Mrs. Anandhi described both simple and multiple regression techniques. Simple linear regression is used to model the relationship between a single independent variable and a dependent variable, while multiple regression involves two or more independent variables. She explained how to interpret R-squared and adjusted R-squared values, which indicate the proportion of variance explained by the model.

Throughout the session, Mrs. Anandhi maintained an engaging and interactive approach. She encouraged questions from the audience and provided clear, thoughtful answers. Her use of real-life examples helped in contextualizing the statistical tools and made the session highly relatable for participants from various academic backgrounds. The lecture concluded with an interactive online quiz session, where students participated enthusiastically. Overall, the session was highly informative and enriched the participants' understanding of using SPSS for conducting robust and reliable research.

The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks, appreciating Mrs. Anandhi S. for her time, knowledge, and enthusiasm. Participants expressed their gratitude for such a well-structured and informative lecture that demystified the complexities of statistical analysis. The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many stating that the session had increased their confidence in using SPSS for their own research work.
