On May 5, 2023,
the Department of Management Studies at SRM Valliammai Engineering College at
SRM Nagar Kattankulathur organized an Industrial visit to United Breweries Ltd,
Aranovoyal village, Thiruvallur district. The production plant was visited by
the 47 MBA students to acquire practical experience with the production process
and managerial duties.
We reached the company around 11:00 AM, the plant’s quality officer Mr.
Deepak welcomed us with open arms. He took us around the unit and explained us
each and every step in the production process .The factory outlay was perfectly
cleaned, organized and both the pathways had boards stating their layout
blueprint, emergency escape route, fire exit lines and earth resistance test
certificate etc .This industry follows Heineken Leadership Competency and 5S methodology
to retain its reputation in the market.
Initially he accompanied us to the Brew house, it is the place where the
production process begins. It takes completely of 12 to 15 days to process the
beverage. Malt, rice, maize are added to the kettle. Atonce, grinded and broken
into particles it reaches mash kettle. In this stage water is added at 45
degree and slowly the temperature raises to 55,61 and 68.Chemicals are added
and checked whether all the malt are converted, it reaches the filter to
extract the impurities.
Now the sugar is added at 100 degree to the
next kettle named whirlpool. Here, waste gets settled down and pure liquid is collected. The liquid
is allowed to ferment at 50.5 degree. Sugar is consumed by yeast plus heat
energy and temperature serially comes down to 2 degree and it is allowed to
ferment for 6 to 7 days in the yeast propogation area.
After
fermentation, it enters lagaring stage. Here it is filtered and the yeast is
utilized for further production. After lagaring it is heated at 100 degree and
cooled at 2 degree and then enters the BBT-Bright Beer Tank. Now CO2 is added
not only for fullness or body but for foaming potential, flavour enhancing and
shelf life extension.
After
BBT it reaches packaging section. They use new and secondhand bottles and they
stated that one line of bottling can hold nearly 25 litres of beer
Consequently,
the industrial visit provided us with the chance to observe the various
processes that are carried out at the United Breweries Ltd and to learn more
